What is Jyotishka?

Jyotishka is a private Vedic astrology app, free to use on the web today, with iOS and Android apps coming soon. It computes birth charts using traditional Jyotisha methods (Whole Sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsha) and lets you ask an AI questions about any chart in your family.

Is it free?

Yes. The birth chart, dasha timeline, yogas, predictions and PDF export are all free, for every chart you create. A Premium subscription adds the Extended Report — divisional charts, Ashtak Varga and detailed Bhava analysis — with its own PDF. Premium is available monthly or annually.

Is my data private?

Yes. Your birth details are stored securely on our servers (encrypted in transit and at rest) so your charts sync across devices, and we do not sell or share personal data with third parties. Chat runs on our servers by default: your question and a chart summary are sent to generate the reply, and we do not store the conversation. On Android you can download the Jyotishka AI model, after which conversations are processed entirely on your phone and never sent to any server. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Who is it for?

Jyotishka is for anyone interested in Vedic astrology — whether you are Indian, part of the South Asian diaspora, or simply curious about Jyotisha. It supports charts for your whole family: yourself, your spouse, children and parents.

Birth chart & calculations

Is a janam kundli the same as a birth chart?

Yes. Janam kundli, jatakam, kundali and birth chart all describe the same thing: a map of the sky at your moment of birth. Jyotishka computes it with Swiss Ephemeris using Whole Sign houses and Lahiri ayanamsha, the conventions most traditional Jyotishis use.

Can I get my kundli in Hindi or another Indian language?

Yes. Jyotishka is fully translated into English, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi and Gujarati — not just the buttons, but the chart interpretations, predictions and the exported PDF, which embeds the correct script for each language.

Are the panchang dates and auspicious days generated by the AI?

No, and this is deliberate. Tithi, vara, festival dates and auspicious days come from the astronomical calculation and a hand-verified festival calendar. They never pass through the language model. The AI can discuss what a date means, but it cannot invent or alter the date itself — and if an answer ever contradicts the calculated calendar, the app flags it and shows you the computed dates instead.

Which ayanamsha does Jyotishka use?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) by default — the standard used in India and by most traditional Jyotishis. Raman and KP (Krishnamurti) are also available in settings.

Which house system is used?

Whole Sign houses — the traditional Vedic system where each house corresponds to exactly one rasi. The lagna (ascendant) is the first house.

What if I don't know my exact birth time?

You can enter an approximate time or leave it blank (the app defaults to noon). The Moon sign, nakshatra and dasha timeline will still be accurate. The lagna (ascendant) will be marked "approximate" because it changes every two hours. Use the Birth Time Verification tool to narrow it down using known life events.

My birth place is outside India — will it work?

Yes. Jyotishka includes city data for India, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, UAE, Singapore, Malaysia and South Africa. For any other location worldwide, a global search fallback finds the correct coordinates and timezone automatically.

How accurate is the dasha timeline?

Very accurate. The Vimshottari dasha start date is computed from the exact Moon longitude at birth. With an exact birth time, the antardasha (sub-period) dates are accurate to within a day or two.

AI assistant

Does the AI send my data to the cloud?

By default, yes — chat runs on our servers on every platform. Your question and a chart summary are sent to our AI provider to generate the reply; the conversation content is not stored on our servers. On Android you can download the on-device model, after which the language model runs entirely on your device and no questions or answers leave your phone. An on-device option for iPhone is not available yet. The app shows which mode you're in.

How large is the AI model download?

Jyotishka AI is approximately 0.8 GB and works fully offline once downloaded. It is available on Android only for now — iPhone and the web app use cloud chat. We recommend downloading on Wi-Fi.

Which devices work best with the AI assistant?

Cloud chat works on any supported iPhone, Android phone or browser. The optional on-device model is Android-only for now and wants roughly 3 GB of RAM or more — most phones from 2018 onwards meet this comfortably. If it feels slow on your device, you can switch back to cloud chat at any time.

Premium & subscriptions

How do I subscribe?

Open the app, go to Settings → Upgrade to Premium, and choose a monthly or annual plan. Payment is processed through the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).

How do I cancel?

Cancellations are handled through the App Store or Google Play — not through Jyotishka directly. On iOS: Settings → your Apple ID → Subscriptions. On Android: Play Store → Subscriptions. You can also reach this from Settings → Manage subscription in the app.

Is there a free trial?

Yes — new users get a 3-day free trial of the Extended Report, no payment required to start. Check the subscription screen in the app for the current offer.

Account & privacy

How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings → Delete account. Type DELETE to confirm. All your data — account, profiles and charts — will be permanently removed within 30 days in accordance with our Privacy Policy and India's DPDP Act 2023.
